AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER CLASSROOMS
Program Components
- Social Interaction and Communication skills: Visual strategies such as Social stories and Comic strip conversations (Gray) are used to help improve social understandings. A functional approach to problem behavior is utilized. Programming designed to address problem behavior is based on teaching new skills that serve the same function as the problem behavior. A proactive approach to behavior management is utilized.
- Sensory: Sensory issues are recognized as contributing to students’ ability to attend and participate in instruction. Students are taught strategies for self-regulation and self-advocacy.
- Environment: A visually structured and positive environment is provided to support each student in meeting his/her individual goals and objectives. Skills are taught in the context of naturally occurring activities and daily routines to promote generalization. Opportunities for instruction in general education settings are available.
